Richard Crowley

Richard Crowley ( born December 14, 1836 in Pendleton, Niagara County, New York, † July 22, 1908 in Olcott Beach, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Richard Crowley attended the common schools and the Lockport Union School. After a subsequent law degree in 1860 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Lockport to work in this profession. In the years 1865 and 1866 he was a legal representative of the city. Politically, he joined the Republican Party. Between 1866 and 1870 he sat in the Senate from New York; 1871 to 1879 he was a federal prosecutor for the northern part of that State.

In the congressional elections of 1878, Crowley was in 31st electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrat Charles B. Benedict on March 4, 1879. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1883 two legislative sessions. Since 1881, he headed the Committee on Claims.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Crowley practiced as a lawyer again. In 1888, he sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Since 1896 until his death, he was an advisor to the state government of New York for claims that arose from the aftermath of the civil war. Richard Crowley died on 22 July 1908 in Olcott Beach, near Lockport.
