Richard Friend

Richard Henry Friend ( born January 18, 1953 in London ) is a British physicist.

Friend studied at the University of Cambridge ( Trinity College), where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1974. After that, he was a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory. In 1977 he became a Fellow of St. John 's College, and in 1978 he received his doctorate. As a post - graduate student, he was 1977/78, scientists from the CNRS at the University of Paris-Sud. In 1980 he became demonstrator University, 1985 Lecturer and Reader in 1993 at the University of Cambridge. From 1995, he was there Cavendish Professor of Physics since 2004 and Chairman of the Physics faculty. 1986/87 he was a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and since 2006 he is professor at the National University of Singapore.

Friend is a pioneer in the field of semiconductors from polymers. He demonstrated from these materials FETs ( 1988), LEDs ( 1990), efficient photovoltaic diodes ( 1995), Laser (1996 ), directly printable ( inkjet ) transistor circuits (2000), light-emitting transistors (2006).

Since 1996 he has been chief scientist of Cambridge Display Technology and since 2000 a scientific advisor at Plastic Logic Ltd.. He co-founded two companies.

In 1988 he was awarded the Charles Vernon Boys Prize and in 1996 the Hewlett Packard Prize of the European Physical Society. Since 1993 he is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Rumford Medal he received in 1998. In 2002 he received the Silver Medal of the Royal Academy of Engineering, which he is a Fellow since 2002 and their McRobert price he received in 2002. In 2003 he received the Gold Medal of the European Materials Research Society, 2003, the EU Descartes Prize 2003 and the Faraday Medal of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. He is a multiple honorary doctorates (Linköping, Mons, Nijmegen, Heriot -Watt University ). In 2004 he was honor Fellow of Trinity College. In 2009 he received the King Faisal Prize, in 2010 in Helsinki the Millennium Technology Prize in 2011 and the Harvey Prize of the Technion in Israel. In 2009 he was awarded with David Fyfe, the Swan Medal.

In 2003 he was knighted.
