Richard Lainhart

Richard Lainhart ( born February 14, 1953 in Vestal, New York, USA, † 30 December 2011) was an American composer, musician and filmmaker.

Life and work

Lainhart was born in 1953 in Vestal, New York, studied composition at the State University of New York at Joel Chadabe, a pioneer of electroacoustic music. As a composer of avant-garde electronic music, he received the piece of White Night, which appeared in 1975 on Brian Eno's album Discreet Music. His compositions have been performed in England, Sweden, Germany, Australia and Japan except in the USA. A retrospective of his works from the 1970s and 1980s, was released in 2001 on the double album Ten Thousand Shades of Blue. In 2008 he received a commission from the Electronic Music Foundation for the concert series New York Soundscape.

With more than 2000 concerts Lainhart led not only to his own works on compositions by John Cage, David Tudor, Steve Reich, Phill Niblock, David Berhman and Jordan Rudess. As a filmmaker, he stepped out in the field of short and animated film. His films have been shown at festivals in the U.S., Canada, Germany and Korea. At the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in Toronto, he received for the film A Haiku Setting prices in several categories. His multimedia work No Other Time 2008 received a prize from the New York State Council.
