Richard Lewis (bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich)

John Hubert Richard Lewis ( born December 10, 1943) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1997 to 2007 Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England.

Lewis attended Radley College and studied at King's College London. TO prepare for his priesthood, he studied theology at St Boniface College, Warminster. In 1967 he was ordained a deacon; 1968 the ordination to the priesthood. His priestly career began from 1967 to 1970 as a vicar ( Curate ) in Hexham, near Newcastle -upon- Tyne. From 1970 to 1977 he worked as an "Industrial Chaplain " (factory Kaplan ). From 1977 to 1982 he worked as a " Communications Officer" in Durham. From 1982 to 1987 he was " Chaplain for Agriculture " in Hereford. From 1987 to 1992 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of Ludlow ( Archdeacon of Ludlow ). He was ordained a bishop in 1992. From 1992 to 1997 he was known as " Bishop of Taunton " suffragan bishop in the diocese of Bath and Wells in the Church of England. In 1997, he was, as the successor of John Dennis, the 9th Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. In 2007, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was Nigel Stock.

Lewis was in his capacity until the end of July 2007 until his retirement as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich as a minister Lord the House of Lords as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich from January 2002.
