Richard Liebreich

Richard Liebreich (* June 30, 1830 in Königsberg, † January 19, 1917 in Paris) was a German physiologist and pioneer in the field of ophthalmology. He was also the older brother of pharmacologists Oskar Liebreich.

Liebreich, born on June 30, 1830 in Königsberg, studied in Berlin Medicine and completed his doctorate in 1853 in Halle. After a period with Frans Cornelis Donders in Utrecht and Ernst Brücke in Berlin, he worked as an assistant doctor from 1854 to 1862 when Albrecht von Graefe in Berlin. During this time, Liebreich wrote several research papers, for example, the first major study of Usher syndrome, and then constructed a very common form of the ophthalmoscope, the so-called " Liebreich ophthalmoscope ".

In Berlin, he also produced the color plates for his " Atlas of Ophthalmoscopy ", which appeared in 1863 and found wide recognition. This also includes the first presentation of the ocular fundus.

1862 Richard Liebreich settled in Paris and practiced there with great success, including through a successful operation on the mother of Emperor Napoléon III .. In connection with the Franco-German War he moved in 1870 to London, where he took up in 1878 line the eye department of St. Thomas 's Hospital. He returned back to Paris entertained there for some time a private practice and then withdrew completely from work to operate in the École des Beaux -Arts as an artist. On January 19, 1917, he died in Paris.
