The Richmond International Airport is the airport of Richmond, the capital of the U.S. state of Virginia.

History

The airport was opened on 15 October 1927 as Richard Evelyn Byrd Flying Field, named in honor of the polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd guest at the inauguration are Charles Lindbergh and his plane Spirit of St. Louis. 1932 takes the airline Eastern Airlines to the first scheduled flights from Byrd Field.

From 1942 until the end of World War II the United States Army Air Corps uses the airport infrastructure is built at this time. In 1968 for 2.8 million dollars ( equivalent to the present value of 19.5 million dollars) more renovation and extension work carried out. In addition to Eastern Airlines and National Airlines, Piedmont Airlines and United Airlines have taken the airport in its route network.

In the years 1995, 2002 and 2007, the terminal building was expanded in 2004 a new tower was inaugurated.

In 2009, 3.3 million passengers used the Richmond airport. There are scheduled flights within the United States and Canada.
