Riederalp

Eastern Part of the Riederalp ( Valley station of the Moosfluh -Bahn )

Riederalp is a created by merger municipality in the district east Raron in Swiss Upper Valais and part of the Aletsch area. It is located southeast of the Aletsch Forest, in the area since 2002 a UNESCO World Heritage Site declared mountain Jungfrau-Aletsch region.

History

The community was founded on November 1, 2003 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities Goppisberg, Greich and Ried- Morel.

Coat of arms

The new total community led since its merger in 2003 no crest; several proposals have been consistently rejected by the Authority. The coat of arms with three stars as a symbol of the communities, mountains and glaciers was adopted by the voting citizens only on 30 November 2008.

Tourism

Riederalp is car-free and lives primarily from tourism. In winter winter sports enthusiasts around 104 km of slopes and 34 plants are in the ski resort Aletsch Arena is available. Since 5 December 2009, a new 4-seater chairlift Hohfluh in operation. In the summer the town is the starting point for hikers and bikers. As a true attraction which opened in the summer of 2008 suspension bridge, connecting the Riederalp with Brig. The 9-hole golf course on Riederalp is the highest in Europe.

Traffic

In Morel is a train station of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB 610).

Riederalp is accessible by cable car Morel - Riederalp -Mitte or 6-person gondola Morel -Ried - Morel - Riederalp- West.

On 14 December 1996, 09.40 clock, a cable car accident occurred at the gondola Riederalp- Moosfluh. The axis of the deflection plate broke at the base station, and several cabins beat due to the considerably enlarged cable slack on the ground. One passenger died, 18 passengers were injured.
