Rihards PÄ«ks

Rihards Pīks ( born December 31, 1941 in Riga) is a Latvian politician and since 2004 a member of the European Parliament for the Tautas partija, as part of the Group of the European People's Party and European Democrats.

Pīks was from 1961 to 1993 worked as a cameraman, director and film producer. In the late 80s, he joined the Latvian People's Front. Between 1993 and 1995 he was an entrepreneur and then taught until 1997 as a lecturer at the Academy of Culture. 1995 to 1996 he was Deputy Chairman of the National Council for Radio and Television.

1996 to 1997 he was Minister of Culture of Latvia. In 1998, the newly founded Pīks Tautas partija at, became a member of the Board and part from 1998 to 2004 for the party the Latvian Parliament to. Meanwhile, Vice President, he was from 1999 to 2000. Furthermore, there was Pīks 1999-2002 Head of the Latvian delegation to the Interparliamentary Union. In 2004 he held the post of the Latvian Foreign Minister from March 9 to July 19.

Pīks is the founder of the NGO Politiskās izglītības funds, since 2000 he is member of the board.
