Ringaudas Songaila

Ringaudas Bronislovas Songaila ( born April 20, 1929 in Klaipėda) was a politician sowjetlitauischer. He was a member of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ), Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR. The Lithuanian SSR also he led from 1987 to 1988 as its first secretary.

Life

From 1959 he was teaching load in sowjetlitauischen and from 1979 in the Soviet Supreme Soviet from 1975 to 1981 Chairman of the Lithuanian Supreme Council. On January 16, 1981, he was the successor of Juozas Maniūšis Chairman of the Council of Ministers. This office he retained until his replacement by Vytautas Sakalauskas on 18 January 1985. Subsequently, he was chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet de facto President of the Parliament of the Lithuanian SSR.

The highlight of his political career was his appointment as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ) on 1 December 1987 as a successor to the recently deceased longtime party leaders Petras Griškevičius. The hope of a implementation of the initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev reform policies of glasnost and perestroika in Lithuania was so disappointed at first because he was known as a conservative functionary. However, he lost this office because of his unpopularity on 20 October 1988, the reformist Central Committee Secretary for Industry, Algirdas Brazauskas.

He was the first party leader, who was deprived of his office, since both Griškevičius as well as its predecessor Antanas Snieckus had retained the post of First Secretary of the LKP to the death.
