Rio, Greece

Rio (Greek Ρίο (n. sg. ), Formerly called Rion Ρίον ) is a city and district since 2011, the municipality of Patras in the region of Western Greece. The city lies on the same cape on the north coast of the Peloponnese in Greece. The strait between Rio and Antirrio separates the Gulf of Patras, in the west by the Gulf of Corinth in the east. Rio on the Peloponnese is connected to Antirrio in Etoloakarnania since the summer of 2004 by the 2,500 m-long Rio - Antirrio bridge.

The official name until 1982 the village was Agios Georgios Riou (Greek Άγιος Γεώργιος Ρίου ).

The town of Rio was also the administrative seat of the homonymous municipality (Greek Δήμος Ρίου ), which was created in 1998 with the plan to restructure the Greek Ioannis Kapodistrias local self-government from the merger of the town of Rio with surrounding villages. On 1 January 2011, this community was incorporated to Patras and has since formed a municipality of Patras, composed of the following prior to 1998 independent localities:
