Río Negro, Chile

Río Negro is a commune in southern Chile. It is situated in the Región de los Lagos about 38 km south of Osorno and 6 km south of the road Ruta 5 The municipality has an area of 1,266 km ² and a population of 14,732 inhabitants ( 7,204 women and 7,528 men according to census of 2002).

The municipality is bordered to the north by the city of Osorno and San Juan de la Costa. In the east it borders the city of Puerto Octay and to the west by the Pacific Ocean, and on the south by Purranque.

The name of Río Negro in Spanish means Black River. He was taken by the Spaniards from the Mapudungun language of the Mapuche, where the word Curuleufu means the same thing.

History

In the 19th century, the Commune was a large settlement between the towns Chahuilco and Purranque. The settlement called the Native Curileufu. The municipality was founded on March 12, 1896 after a land grant by Jose Miguel Alderete. The first mayor was Pedro González.
