Rising Star is a city in Eastland County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on U.S. Highway 183, about 90 km southeast of Abilene in southwestern Eastland County and has a total area of 4.3 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The origins of the city lie in 1876, when six families from the Gregg County settled here. 1878 was the first post office and the place was called Copperas Creek. 1880, the town was renamed in Rising Star. In 1889 there were in the place already five stores and three doctors. Another big growth experienced the city in 1909 by oil discoveries. The boom continued only until 1920.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 835 people in 345 households and 212 families. The population density was 191.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 93.65 % White, 0.24 % African American, 0.36 % Native American, 0.12 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.87 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.75% were of mixed descent, and 6.23% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 345 households 24.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.1 % were married couples living together. 9.0 % had a female householder with no husband, and 38.3% were non-families. 35.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size amounted to 2.98.

23.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.8 % from 18 to 24, 22.6% 25-44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 24.4% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 83.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 19,118, and the median income for a family $ 30,000. Males have a median income of $ 22,750 versus $ 15,625 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,636. 24.4 % of the population and 19.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 33.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 25.0 % of those 65 or older.
