The Viaduct Calstock

The Tamar ( Cornish: Dowr Tamer ) is a river in south-west England. It forms over long distances the border between Devon and Cornwall. The Tamar flows north-west of Plymouth, together with the River Tavy in the Hamoaze. The Hamoaze goes into Plymouth Sound after a few kilometers between Devil 's Point and Mount Edgcumbe.

The river rises about 6 km from the northern coast of Cornwall, near East Youlstone. Also in the north flows through the Upper Tamar Tamar the Lake and the Lower Tamar Lake, near Alfardisworthy. In contrast to other European rivers, the Tamer has hardly expanded artificial and could retain its natural river bed mostly. For this reason, the area of the lower Tamar Valley was declared in 1995 to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
