Popularity

Riverside came to international prominence when it was in March 1985 declared the official future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. The idea came about when the city council was looking for a motto for the annual town festival. Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, the city had determined previously in his book "The Making of Star Trek " as the birthplace of Kirk. The proposal to connect the town festival with Star Trek, was finally adopted unanimously. A memorial stone in the center and a replica of a Star Trek space ship to illustrate this claim. In keeping with the theme was chosen as a motto of the city "Where the Trek Begins". Several Star Trek novels and the film Star Trek take on Riverside reference.
