Rob Dixon

Rob Dixon (* in the 20th century in Atlanta ) is an American jazz saxophonist and music producer.

Life and work

Dixon learned from the age of ten saxophone. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampton University in Virginia, he studied further at the University of Indiana with David Baker. After moving to New York City in 1996, he played with, among others, with well-known jazz musicians such as Tony Bennett, Dakota Staton, the Ellington band, Jonah Jones, Slide Hampton, Ray Charles, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.

In the following years he worked for four years in the Illinois Jacquet Big Band. Together with the tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, he joined the quartet Tana Reid, which was led by drummer Akira Tana and the renowned bassist Rufus Reid.

Dixon went back to Indianapolis in 2003, where he worked with the Cleveland Heritage Jazz Orchestra and the Buselli - Wallarab Jazz Orchestra. As a bandleader, he has the funk-jazz combo Triology 1 and an organ - centered Quartet with Melvin Rhyne built. He earned his living as a deputy leader at the Owl Studios.

Dixon is under contract with the Owl Studios, a jazz fusion record label based in Indianapolis, its vice-president he is. He has two albums released as a bandleader - What Things Could Be (2006) and Reinvention: The Dixon - Rhyne Project ( 2008). On the organist Melvin Rhyne Reinvention is co-led the design and name of it.

Alongside he is Director of Education ( artistic director and Nachwuchförderer ) of the annual Indianapolis Indy Jazz Fest festival. After the owner of the Owl Studios had bought the naming rights of the Festival of the American Pianists Association, which had led it since 2000, they invented it as a new non-profit event. The new owner focused on integrating schools and high schools as well as jazz bands of the regional universities. The ticket prices were family friendly, less expensive, and the place was laid. Instead around the " father ' day" in early summer it was moved into the third week of September, according to Dixon because you then have a better chance to get good artists.

Dixon also often works as a sideman with other musicians by Owl Studios, including Derrick Gardner & the Jazz Prophets, Cynthia Layne, Steve Allee, Mike Clark and The Headhunters. According to their own statements in his blog at Owl Studios Rob plays every first Wednesday of the month at the Indianapolis Jazz Club The Jazz Kitchen and there is host of the jazz jam session every last Monday of the month. Also in the regional Chatterbox Jazz Club, he appears occasionally. One of his compositions ( with Raeford Gerald ) Bump ' N From The Middle is on the compilation Act 1 on the southbound label Ace Records (UK ).

In October 2010, Dixon was a member of the Mike Clark Trio on a Russian sponsored by the U.S. Embassy tour with 17 concerts across Russia.

Rob Dixon is not to be confused with the actor.
