Robert Ackman

Robert George Ackman, OC ( born September 27, 1927 in Dorchester, New Brunswick, † July 16, 2013 in Halifax, Nova Scotia ) was a Canadian chemist and professor at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Ackman became famous with her operated by basic research in the field of omega-3 fatty acids.

Life and career

After studying organic chemistry at the University of Toronto, from which he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts, Ackman received in 1952 a Master of Science from Dalhousie University and a Ph.D. in 1956 from the University of London. From 1950 he worked for the Canadian government in the field of marine science, first as a research assistant and from 1956 to 1979 as a staff chemist. In this capacity, he was appointed in 1972 a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada. This was followed by a call to the Technical University of Nova Scotia, where he worked as a professor at the Institute of Fisheries Technology until his retirement in 1995. During this time, Ackman has published over 550 scientific papers and articles.
