Robert Clive (diplomat)

Sir Robert Henry Clive GCMG, PC ( * December 27, 1877, † May 13, 1948 ) was a British diplomat.

Life

Clive was the son of Katherine Elizabeth Mary Julia and Charles Feilding Meysey Bolton Clive. He was educated at Haileybury College and Magdalen College, Oxford. 1902 Clive joined the Foreign Service. In 1905 he married Magdalen Muir Mackenzie († October 1971 ). They had one daughter and two sons. From 1920 to 1923 he was employed in Beijing. From 1923 to 1924 he was General in Munich with the district of Bavaria. From 1924 to 1926 he was Consul General in Tangier During this time, the consul general of the Protecting Powers of the Conference acted on 29 June 1923 in London as the Government of the International Zone of Tangier. From 1926 to 1931 he was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary in Tehran. From 1933 to 1934 he was the ambassador to the Holy See from 1935 to 1937 he was ambassador in Brussels, Belgium. From 1937 to 1939 he was ambassador in Tokyo, Japan. 1934 Clive was admitted to the Privy Council. In 1937 he became a member of the Order of St Michael and St George. In 1939 he was forced to retire.
