Robert Craufurd

Robert Craufurd ( born May 5, 1764 in Newark, Ayrshire (Scotland ); † January 23, 1812 in Ciudad Rodrigo ( Salamanca province ), Spain) was a British general.

Life

Robert Craufurd occurred in 1779 in the 25th Foot Regiment, and then fought as a Captain with the 75th Regiment from 1790 to 1792 in British India against Tipu Sultan in 1793 and returned back to England.

In 1794 he accompanied his brother, later Lieutenant General Charles Craufurd to the Austrian Army, took a long time its place and recommended that the government through its clear, insightful reports. It was during the Irish Rebellion in 1798 Lieutenant Colonel and Deputy Quartermaster General.

Robert Craufurd was a British liaison officer on the staff General Suvorov, made with its 1799 invasion of Switzerland and was then ordered to report to the Dutch expedition army of the Duke of York.

From 1800 to 1805 he was a member of parliament for East Retford ( Northumberland ), but increased in 1807 to active duty again and commanded in 1807 as a brigadier general in the expedition under General John Whitelocke against Buenos Aires in the vanguard.

As a Major General, he sailed in 1807 with Sir David Baird to the Iberian Peninsula, where Baird's corps with the troops of Sir John Moore met in Mayorga on 20 December. Craufurds troops were repeatedly involved in fights, especially on December 28 in Castrogonzalo. On December 31, the Light Division was sent under the command of Charles of Old and Craufurd to Vigo, where they embarked for England.

After the return of the English - allied troops on the peninsula, he led in the Battle of Talavera July 29, 1809 the Lord Wellington to gain, distinguished himself at Almeida and Coimbra and at the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, but was on 19 January when storm mortally wounded at this fort and died five days later, on 23 January 1812.

In Memory of General Craufurd a memorial plaque is located on the city wall of Ciudad Rodrigo, near the wall duct, in his Escalade he was attached. In addition, a monument was erected for him and General Mackinnon, who is also at the storm fell on Ciudad Rodrigo, in London's St Paul's Cathedral.
