Robert Goff, Baron Goff of Chieveley
Robert Lionel Archibald Goff, Baron Goff of Chieveley, PC, FBA ( born November 12, 1926) is a British retired judge and life peer.
Life and career
His education was Goff at Eton College before he started studying at New College, where he graduated in 1953 with a Master of Arts and his doctorate in 1972.
Goff served from 1945 to 1948 in the Scots Guards.
At Lincoln College, University of Oxford, he was 1951-1955 Fellow and Tutor. In 1951 he was admitted into the Inner Temple as a lawyer. In 1975, he was there Bencher. Goff in 1967 Attorney-General.
From 1974 to 1975 he was Recorder of the Crown Court, and from 1975 to 1982 Judge of the High Court of Justice. From 1979 to 1981 he was a judge of the Commercial List and President ( Chairman ) of the Commercial Court Committee. From 1982 to 1985 he was Lord Justice of Appeal.
From 1980 to 1981 he was honorary professor of Half Legal Ethics at the University of Birmingham. In 1983 he was Lecturer Maccabaean and 1987 Lionel Cohen Lecturer in Jerusalem, and in 1993 Cassell Lecturer in Stockholm. Goff was 1976-1982 Chairman of the Board ( Council) of Legal Education and from 1986 to 1991, the Court of the University of London.
In the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, he was initially from 1986 to 2001 and Chairman since 2001 President. From 1990 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Advisory Council ( Advisory Council ) of the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law. From 1986 to 1991, Goff President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. In 1986, he was President of the Bentham Club. From 1986 to 1987 he was at the Holdsworth Club. At the University of Oxford from 1990 to 2001 he was High Steward.
He is co- author of The Law of Restitution, which he wrote with Professor Gareth Jones. In addition, Goff is patron ( patron ) of the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal,
Membership in the House of Lords
Goff in 1986 was Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and remained so until 1996, the same time he became a life peer as Baron Goff of Chieveley in the County of Berkshire. Following this, he was Senior Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1996 until his retirement in 1998.
His presence at meeting days at the end of the 1990 irregular, two -digit and sank after the turn of the millennium still further. Most recently, he was present at the session 2004/2005.
Since the 25th of May 2010 he is on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords Leave of Absence.
Honors
Goff supports several honorary doctorates. The City University and the University of Reading honored him with an honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Letters ( Hon DLitt ). The University of Buckingham, University of London and the University of Bristol, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Laws ( Hon LLD).
He is an Honorary Fellow of Lincoln College since 1983, the New College since 1986, and the Wolfson College since 2001. 1987 he became a Fellow of the British Academy.
Goff was honored for his contribution to the British consciousness of German law with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany first class.
Family
Goff comes from the family of the barons Davis - Goff, was born the second child of Lionel Trevor Davis - Goff and his wife Isobel Denroche -Smith and has an older sister. Since 1953, he is married to Sarah Cousins , with whom he has two sons and two daughters. One of the sons had already died.
He lives in Berkshire.
