Robert Jungk

Robert Jungk (May 11, 1913 in Berlin, † 14 July 1994 in Salzburg, actually Robert Baum ) was a publicist, journalist and one of the first futurist. Jungk in 1986 was the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award.

Life

Robert Jungk was the son of the playwright, actor and director David Wood ( stage name Max Jungk, 1872-1937 ) and actress Sara Bravo ( artist name Elli Branden, 1885-1948 ). As a student of humanistic Mommsen -Gymnasium in Berlin -Westend, he participated in the anti-bourgeois German - Jewish youth movement, was a member of the Socialist Students Federation ( SSB), an organization that was close to the Communist Party opposition, and at the International Workers Aid ( IAH). After graduation in 1932, he began his study of philosophy in Berlin and participated in the initiated by Harro Schulze- Boysen enemy circle.

Shortly after coming to power of the Nazis Jungk was arrested on the night of the Reichstag fire, but arrived with the help of his friend Sven Schacht, a nephew of the president of the Reichsbank, Hjalmar Schacht, again in freedom. Shortly afterwards, he emigrated to Paris in May 1933. This was followed by studies at the Sorbonne, filming in France and Spain, as well as activities for German -language press service of emigrants and 1937, a longer stay in Prague.

While Jungk had kept away until then " deeply divided " by the groupings of political emigration, he would in Prague a " close contact " to an exiled group of Marxist psychoanalyst Otto Fenichel order. After 1945 he was in Paris, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles correspondent for Swiss, German, Dutch and French publications. In 1957 he moved with his wife Ruth to Austria, first to Vienna. From 1970, they lived in Salzburg.

In 1952 he published his first work, The future has already begun to question the future of humanity.

Jungk was one of the most important pioneers of the international environmental and peace movements. He invented the future workshops and founded in 1985 by Robert Jungk library for future issues. Since 1964 he was co-editor of the book series models for a new world. In the same year he founded the Institute for Future Studies in Vienna. One of his employees at this Institute was Ernst Florian Winter. Robert Jungk in 1977 coined the term " nuclear state " and the eponymous book. From 1980, Jungk was active in the peace movement. Robert Jungk was married to Ruth Suschitzky since 1948. 1952 has come to the world of their son Peter Stephan Jungk.

Robert Jungk was Buried in the Jewish cemetery in Salzburg.
