Robert Kalina

Robert Kalina ( born June 29, 1955) is a designer at the Austrian National Bank. He is best known for the design of banknotes.

All former Austrian schilling banknotes since 1982, went back to his designs.

International fame he achieved, however, by the designs of the euro banknotes that have been selected in September 1996 by a jury of 44 competing designs. A particular difficulty was the requirement that the design should have no cause for national jealousies. While many other designs remained in the bill tradition and at least used instead of anonymous portraits identifiable personalities, Kalina waived entirely on faces and used motifs from the European architectural history with its transnational architectural styles. The design of the euro banknotes was generally rated as successful by their pan-European introduction, since no national allusions were recognizable in them. The next time any significant redesign is planned. The design for the 2nd issue of euro banknotes issued in 2013, also based on his designs.

Robert Kalina also designed the design for which was introduced in the year 2002 200 - Convertible - Mark banknote from Bosnia - Herzegovina, the optically completely different from the other denominations.

He is also responsible for the design of the introduced on 1 January 2006 notes and coins of the Azerbaijan manat.
