Robert Lowry (hymn writer)

Robert Lowry ( born March 12, 1826 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † 25 November 1899 in Plainfield, New Jersey) was an American professor of literature, a Baptist clergyman and composer of numerous gospel songs in the style of revivalism, the gospel song.

Life

Robert Lowry studied theology at the present Bucknell University in Lewisburg. After graduating in 1854 he was ordained as a Baptist minister. He led several communities including New York, Brooklyn, Westchester, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. From 1880 to 1886 he was also president of the New Jersey Baptist Sunday School Union ( New Jersey Sunday School Association ).

In 1869 he returned again to the university to Lewisburg order to teach there.

For the most part, however, Lowry is known as a composer of sacred music revivalists. Many of his songs were about 500 gospel also translated into German and other languages ​​. Also, Lowry worked as an editor of musical works for the Biglow Publishing Company. Despite his musical success Robert Lowry wanted to know, however, life understood more as a preacher rather than as a musician.
