Robert Michaelis von Olshausen

Robert Michaelis by Olshausen ( born July 3, 1835 in Kiel as Robert Michael Olshausen, † February 1, 1915 in Berlin) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician.

Life and work

Robert Olshausen was born the eldest son of orientalist Justus Olshausen (1800-1882) and his wife Maria in Kiel. In 1853, he passed from his high school and then studied at the universities of Kiel and Königsberg medicine. In Koenigsberg received his doctorate in 1857 he earned his doctorate work De laryngitis membranoeae epidemia to the doctor of medicine. 1859 Olshausen went to the Women's Clinic of the University of Berlin, in 1861, he worked as an assistant in Halle, where in the same year he completed his habilitation with Scripture observationum de partubus pelvi angusta impeditis particula. 1862 was his appointment as associate professor and director of the University Women's Hospital. 1864 he was appointed a full professor. During his time as director of the Women's Hospital their new building in order to ensure the presence of the director in obstetrics fell from 1878., This service received a villa next to the clinic. In the years 1880 and 1881 Olshausen had held the office of Rector of the University of Halle. A professor at the University of Leipzig from 1886 leaning Olshausen, but the following year went to Berlin, where he succeeded Karl Schroeder ( 1838-1887 ). For the 100th anniversary of the university in 1910 he was elevated to the Prussian nobility.

In addition to numerous articles for scientific journals Olshausen also wrote contributions for textbooks and devoted himself as editor of the journal Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. With Johann Veit (1852-1917) he revised Karl Schroeder's textbook of obstetrics with inclusion of postpartum diseases and surgery teaching.

Robert Michaelis of Olshausen was married from 1865 with Georgina Johanna Dorothea Amalie Rathgen ( 1842-1911 ).

His daughter Marie Margarete ( born March 12, 1866 in Halle, † February 14, 1965 in Potsdam) married on October 3, 1887 Walther von Volkmann, a son of the Halle surgeon Richard von Volkmann ( 1830-1889 ) and his wife Anna of Schlechtendahl.

His granddaughter Clothilde of Olshausen (1907-1997) was a historian and archivist at the State Archives of Magdeburg.
