Johann Veit

Johann Friedrich Otto Siegfried Veit, called Johann Johannes ( born June 17, 1852 in Berlin, † June 2, 1917 at Schierke ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician. He has held professorships at the universities of Berlin, Leiden, Erlangen and Halle.

Life

Vitus father was a native of a German - Jewish banking family go. Sanitätsrat Otto Siegfried Veit (1822-1883), a Berlin- respected surgeon and obstetrician. The mother Marie Friederike Pauline Malotki of Trzbiatowski came from a military family Pomeranian.

Veit studied medicine at the University of Leipzig. During his studies he participated as a member of the Medical Services 1870/71 part of the Franco-German War. In 1874 he received his doctorate at the Berlin Friedrich- Wilhelms- University Dr. med. Afterwards it was until 1879, assistant physician at the Royal Women's Hospital in Berlin and became a professor in obstetrics and gynecology. At the same time he led from 1882 to 1896, a gynecological private clinic, which changed its location in Berlin several times. Up to 300 women per year were hospitalized in it. 1893 Veit was appointed a full professor. In 1896 he was appointed the University of Leiden. From there he went on study trips, including to Frankfurt am Main to Paul Ehrlich to learn serological and biological methods of work with him. In 1902 he was invited to teach at the University of Erlangen and two years later in 1904 at the University of Halle to where he was Dean of the Medical Faculty and in 1911/12 also served as rector.

Despite a heart attack in 1912, the dismissed long ago from the Landwehr physicians took over again in 1914 military duties at the hospital Commission in Halle. On a hike to the Brocken he died of a recent heart attack.

Children

Johann Veit 1882 born in Hall daughter Charlotte Emilie Anna Veit was a student of Henry van de Velde at the art school in Weimar. She married in 1922 in Halle ( Saale), the German - Baltic agronomists Harald Woldemar Carlos Rathlef, who was married in first marriage to the sculptor Harriet Ellen Siderovna of Rathlef - man wedge.

Vitus 1884 in Berlin -born son was the anatomist Otto Veit, who built the Anatomical Institute of the University of Cologne and directed until his retirement in 1957. Work

Vitus particular merit was the connection with the immunology of gynecological practice and the treatment of cancer with radium. He also trained nurses and midwives for use in the Near East.

Veit published mainly on the subjects of anatomy of the vagina and the female pelvis, as well as uterine cancer and ectopic pregnancy. In addition to his Contribute to the manual of gynecology from 1896 to 1899, he published jointly with Robert Olshausen a textbook of obstetrics. Together with the German pathologist Carl Ruge he is regarded as describer of cervical cancer.
