Robert Montgomery (colonial administrator)

Sir Robert Montgomery (* 1809 in Moville, County Donegal, Ireland; † in British India 1887) was a British colonial administrator in India.

Life

Robert was born on the family estate in New Park, Moville. At the age of seventeen he went to India. Initially he worked in the Indian Civil Service. He married there and raised a family. His second son was Henry, the father of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.

Robert Montgomery's first notable position in British India was that of an officer in Cawnpore. In May 1857 at the beginning of the great Indian uprising, he was vice- governor of the province Punjab in Lahore. He left immediately disarm the local garrison, which they kept her from participating in the riots. For his prudent behavior to him the knighthood was granted.

In the period from April 3, 1858 until February 15, 1859 Montgomery was the Chief Commissioner of Oudh. Later, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor and remained so up to an advanced age.
