Robert Nutter

Robert Nutter (* 1550 in Burnley, Lancashire, according to another source, 1557; † July 26, 1600 in Lancaster ) was a Dominican priest and martyr. He was beatified on 22 November 1987, Pope John Paul II, his feast is July 27.

Robert Nutter worked first as a diocesan priest in England. After about a two-year exile from England, he returned and worked for two years as pastor. In 1585 he was captured and entered the Dominican Order. He gained some notoriety by debates with evangelical theologians in the castle Lancaster, near which he was martyred on July 26, 1600. Robert Nutter was hanged.

Robert Nutter is one of about 85 martyrs, priests, religious and lay people who were martyred in England in the 16th century because of their commitment to the Catholic faith and to the Pope. His beatification took place on 22 November 1987.
