Robert Payne Smith

Robert Payne Smith ( born November 7, 1818 in Chipping Campden, † March 31, 1895 in Canterbury Cathedral) was professor of theology at the University of Oxford in the position of Regius Professor of Divinity and Canon at the same time at Christchurch.

His main work is the Thesaurus syriacus, a Syrian- Latin dictionary, in which he took into account the entire hitherto known Syrian literature. 1903 gave his daughter Jessie Payne Margoliouth based on the Thesaurus syriacus out a shortened Syrian- English dictionary.
