Robert Smith, Baron Smith of Kelvin

Robert Haldane Smith, Baron Smith of Kelvin KT ( born August 8, 1944) is a Scottish businessman and politician, the governor was formerly with the British Broadcasting Corporation before the BBC Trust was founded. He is currently Chancellor of the University of the West of Scotland and Chairman of supported by the UK Government 's Green Investment Bank.

Biography

Smith went to the Allan Glen 's School in Glasgow. In 1963 he began a career as an accountant at Robb Ferguson & Company. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1968.

He then worked until 1982 at the ICFC, today 3i, and from 1983 at the Royal Bank of Scotland. From 1985 to 1989 he was Managing Director of Charterhouse Development Capital Ltd.. He was also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Grenfell Private Equity, Chief Executive Officer at Morgan Grenfell Asset Management and was 2000-2002 Vice Chairman at its successor organization the German asset management. He had several places., As director of MFI Furniture Group plc, Stakis hotels, the Bank of Scotland, Tip Europe and Network Rail

1997-2000 Smith was a member of the Financial Services Authority and a member of the Financial Reporting Council. He was the former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and 1993-2002 Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Museums of Scotland. He is, since 1995, president of the British Association of Friends of Museums and was a member 1988-1998 and 1996-1998 Vice Chairman of the Museums and Galleries Commission.

Current Set

He is currently Chairman of the Weir Group and Scottish and Southern Energy and Non-Executive Director of 3i, the Standard Bank Group Limited and Aegon UK. He is also patron of the Scottish Community Foundation.

On 8 February 2008, he became chairman of the company that organized the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It was in May 2012, the first chairman of the UK Green Investment Bank.

Academic assessment

Smith holds honorary degrees from the universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Paisley, where he was chancellor from 2003. During his time the merger took place with the Bell College in Hamilton, with the intention to create the largest university in Scotland. The university changed its name to University of the West of Scotland in November 2007. In 2010 he received the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors an honorary membership.

Private life

Lord Smith married in 1969 Alison Marjorie Bell. They first called Mrs Alison Smith, ud was Ladysmith, when her husband was knighted in 1999. The couple has two daughters.

He owns the island Inchmarnock on the west coast of the island of Bute in the Firth of Clyde.

Honors

1999 Smith was knighted. On 18 April 2008 it was announced that Sir Robert Life Peer in the House of Lords will and he was there on 29 May 2008 as Baron Smith of Kelvin, of Kelvin in the City of Glasgow, Cross Bencher. 2014 he was inducted into the Order of thistle. He was at the same time Chancellor of the Order.
