Roberto Cherro

Roberto Eugenio Cherro ( born February 23, 1907 in Barracas ( Buenos Aires ), † October 11, 1965 ) was an Argentine football player. He participated with the Argentine national team at the World Cup in 1930 in Uruguay, where the Gauchos failed due to host Uruguay until the endgame.

In his youth, played in the Barracas, a neighborhood of Buenos Aires, born Robert Cherro, called by many often only Cherro, while resident in Barracas Club Sportivo Barracas. 1924, the then 17 -year-old was taken into the professional squad. After a year at Sportivo he moved on to Ferro Carril Oeste in 1925, a club that was one of the best in Argentina at that time. Again, only a year later he got an offer from Boca Juniors, which he accepted, of course. With the club from the slums of La Boca Cherro brought in his first season, his first championship. This season he was top scorer in the Argentine league. This feat he could repeat in 1928 and 1930. The Boca Juniors was formed in the late 1920s a team that should dominate at the beginning of the 1930s the Argentine football. Besides Cherro also other sizes of that time such as Pedro Suárez, Francisco Varallo, Domingo Tarasconi and Ludovico Bidoglio played in La Boca. The team took their next championship anno 1930, followed in 1931 to defend the title. Again master Cherro was it with Boca Juniors in 1934 and a year. Three years later ended his career Cherro at the age of 31 years.

National

Roberto Cherro came 1926-1937 to 16 missions in the Argentine national soccer team. At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam 1928, he was there with his team but failed in the final to Uruguay. A year later, the Gauchos got themselves the Copa América. At the tournament in 1929 Cherro in the game against Paraguay ( Score: 4-1 ) scored a goal. Again, a year later Cherro was nominated by coach Francisco Olazar for the football World Cup in Uruguay. The Argentine played a good tournament, reached by victories against France, Mexico, Chile and the USA in the final. There was, however, Uruguay at the Estadio Centenario a size too big. The Celeste decided the duel between the two rivals from the Rio de la Plata 4-2 for itself. Cherro itself was used during the tournament only once, 1-0 in the first game against France.

On February 5, 1933 posted Cherro actually a midfielder, all four goals in a 4-1 victory over the reigning champions Uruguay. His international career ended after 16 Cherro inserts ( 13 goals) 1937.
