Roberto Sierra

Roberto Sierra ( born October 9, 1953 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican composer.

Life

Roberto Sierra studied at the Conservatory and the University of Puerto Rico. He continued his education at the Royal College of Music in London and the Instituut voor Sonology the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht continued and was 1979-1982 student of György Ligeti at the Academy of Music in Hamburg.

Upon his return to Puerto Rico, he was Director of the Department of Cultural activities of the University and Chancellor of the Conservatory. He was Composer in Residence of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 1989. Since 1992 he teaches composition at Cornell University.

Sierra 1987 is best known for his first major orchestral work Júblio, which was performed by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. In 2003 he received the Academy Award for Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2004, he won the Kenneth Davenport Competition with his First Symphony.

In the season 2004/ 05 he was composer -in-residence of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. 2006 his Missa Latina (Pro Pax ) under Leonard Slatkin was premiered at the Kennedy Center.
