The University of Utrecht ( Dutch: Universiteit Utrecht - UU, formerly Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht - RUU ) is the second largest university in the Netherlands, located in the city of Utrecht. She counted in the year 2009 29.927 students and 8.614 employees.

History

Utrecht University was founded on March 26, 1636 and is named after the University of Leiden, the (now repealed ) University of Franeker and Groningen University, the fourth oldest university in the country. Founded in 1584 Municipal Library Utrecht was founded with the University of Utrecht University Library, the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. The University is a member of the League of European Research Universities LERU and the Utrecht Network.
