Geographical location

The Robeson Channel (English Robeson Channel) is the northernmost part of the Canadian Naresstraße between Ellesmere Island and northwestern Greenland. The distance between the two islands of Cape Porter ( Greenland) At its narrowest point to Cape Beechey 24 km, in the north of the strait widens up to 80 km. It connects the Kennedy channel with the belonging to the Arctic Ocean Lincolnsee. During short periods in the summer, the channel is not completely frozen and therefore navigable.

The Robeson Channel was discovered in 1861 by Isaac Israel Hayes and 1871 go through the first time by Charles Francis Hall with the Polaris. He was explored by George Nares 1875/76. This also succeeded in the first passage from Baffin Bay to Lincolnsee on the Naresstraße later named after him. The channel is named after George M. Robeson, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1869 to 1877.
