The Robusta coffee or lowland coffee (scientific Coffea canephora ) is a species of the genus coffee ( Coffea ). It was discovered in the 19th century in Africa.

Features

Robusta coffee grows as a shrub or up to eight meters high tree. In culture, the plants are kept significantly smaller for better handleability. The leaves are oblong -elliptic, rarely ovoid or lanceolate. They are up to 40 centimeters long, show a distinct peak and sometimes a slightly wavy edge. The side sheets are triangular and pointed at a length of six to 18 millimeters. The flowers are five - to six -, rarely siebenzählig and are in axillary clusters to eight to thirty. The fruits are broad, ovate - elliptic.

Use

Robusta coffee is grown mainly in the lowlands. The species is less susceptible to disease, heat and high humidity than the Arabica coffee ( Coffea arabica), taking into account more and faster ripening fruit. About 30% of world coffee production making out, he is mainly grown in West Africa and Southeast Asia. The fruits are usually processed dry. They are dried as a whole with pulp and parchment envelope in the sun and then processed in peelers, which extract the actual beans.

The taste of Robusta is "earthy " to " musty " and is especially appreciated in France, Spain, Portugal and Eastern Europe. The caffeine content is two to four percent is about twice as high as that of Arabica coffee and the content of chlorogenic acid stimulating is also about twice as high.
