Roderich Benedix

Julius Roderich Bendix ( born January 21, 1811 in Leipzig, † September 26, 1873 ) was a German playwright, actor and theater director.

Life

Roderich Bendix attended the Thomas School in Leipzig, but followed his passion for the theater and actors in 1831. He played in Bethmann's company for two years in Dessau, Bernburg, Köthen, Meiningen and Rudolstadt, then took a commitment in Westphalia, and later on the Rhine and has performed in Minden, Paderborn, Kleve, Krefeld, Mainz and Wiesbaden, until 1838 Wesel on the Lower Rhine came.

Here he succeeded in 1841 to bring his first play The mossy head, on the stage, which made ​​the rounds on almost all stages of Germany with the most resolute acclaim. Do not reduce success had his second piece Doctor wasp.

Bendix took it in Wesel, the editors of People magazine " The speaker ", but moved in 1842 to Cologne, where he introduced himself by much attended lectures on Goethe's Faust. In 1844 he took over the technical management of the King James Theatre, which he led for a year, and worked since 1847 in the same capacity at the Cologne theater under Gerlachs Directorate, while he held at the same time again lectures on recent lyricist and playwright in Germany to a selected audience.

As in Cologne, the Rheinische music school was organized, including Bendix got there a teaching job. In 1855 he became the manager of the Municipal Theatre Frankfurt, however, put this place down in 1859 and returned to Cologne. Later he lived, intellectually always engaged, but in recent years, suffering physically, in Leipzig, where he died on 26 September 1873.

Work

As a dramatic poet Bendix has successes harvested as by August von Kotzebue hardly a writer of comedies. Most of his comedies were favorite pieces of the German people.

Even beyond Germany's borders found Bendix ' pieces recognition.
