Roger Morris (1695–1749)

Roger Morris ( born April 19, 1695 in London, † January 31, 1749 ) was an English architect. He was among the most gifted and most independent representatives of the Palladian.

Roger Morris has received several important commissions during his career, he built, among other things, the Palladian Bridge in the park of Wilton House in Wiltshire (1736-1737); Marble Hill House in Twickenham (1724-1729); White Lodge in Richmond Park, Whitton Place in the county of Middlesex (1732-1739, destroyed) and Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire ( 1728 ).

The Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, Inveraray made ​​to the Royal Burgh and gave him for the city to rights. 1744 then the whole place and the old family castle was burned in order to implement the new plans by John Vanbrugh for the lock ( Inveraray Castle) and the city. The work according to the plans of the architect Roger Morris and William Adam, the prototype of a series of English neo-Gothic mansions, began in 1746 and lasted until 1789.
