Roger Stevens (diplomat)

Sir Roger Bentham Stevens KCMG (1968), KCVO (1955 ) (* June 8, 1906, † 20 February 1980) was a British diplomat.

Life

Roger Bentham Stevens was studying in Wellington and at Queen's College, Oxford in 1931 married Roger Bentham Stevens, Constance Hallam Hipwell († 1976). With her he had a son. In 1977 he married Jane Chandler, born Irving. His written heritage has been archived 1984 at Churchill Archives of the University of Cambridge.

1928 Stevens joined the Foreign Service and was in Buenos Aires, New York City, Antwerp, Denver and London busy. From 1948 he served as Assistant Under- Secretary of State, Head of the German Commercial Relations and Industry Department, the General Economic Department and the German Supply Department in the FO. and from 1950 Donald St. Clair Gainer assumed.

From 1951 to 1954 he was ambassador in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1954 to 1958 he was ambassador in Tehran. He wrote two books on Persia, the land of the Great Sophy (1962) and First View of Persia (1964).

From 1958 to 1963 he was in London, Deputy Under- Secretary of State, Federal Foreign Office. From 1963 to 1970 he was Vice - Chancellor of the University of Leeds. From 1963 to 1970 he was a consultant for Central Africa. From 1965 to 1970 he was Chairman of the Planning Association of Yorkshire and Humberside. From 1970 to 1972 he sat in the Planning Committee for Greater London. From 1972 to 1974 he was chairman of the supervisory authority for mining. From 1972 to 1977 he was a member of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal ( UNAT ).
