Roger Taylor (tennis)

Roger Taylor ( born October 14, 1941 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire ) is a former British tennis player. In his career, he won seven singles and nine doubles titles.

He recorded his success in different Grand Slam tournaments. Before the two U.S. Open take place in the years 1971 and 1972 in a double he reached the semi-finals of the 1967 and 1970 Wimbledon Championships in the single discipline. In 1973 the quarter- finals of the French Open and the semifinals at Wimbledon again. After ATP ranking his highest singles ranking was eleventh place. Before the introduction of the ATP ranking 1970 he was ranked to rank 8.

Career

Taylor was the only British member of the so-called Handsome Eight, which was persuaded by Lamar Hunt to take part of the newly formed World Championship Tennis tour in 1968. Notable was Taylor's sense of fairness. During his quarter-final match against the 17 -year-old Wimbledon debutant Björn Borg he endeared himself to millions of viewers. It was declared by the referee already a winner before he proposed to repeat the point, because the linesman was not sure if the ball is in or outside of the field was. Then, the left-hander won the game. His retirement from professional tennis in 1980 he was known. In the period from February 2000 to January 2004 he was team captain of the British Davis Cup team. Taylor led in 1978, the British Wightman Cup team of women at their last success.
