Rohan, Morbihan

Rohan is a commune with 1670 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region. It belongs to the district of the canton of Rohan Pontivy. The town lies on the banks of the River Oust, Josselin below.

History

Rohan is the former Vice Porhoët County and is the ancestral home of the Rohan family. The Seigneurie was created in 1120 by the division of an estate between Geoffroy and Alain de Porhoët. The latter took possession of the right bank (except Ploërmel ) and around Josselin, and built his castle here. 1604 brought Henry IV Rohan to the Duchy, but then moved to the new duke, Henri II de Rohan, Pontivy its headquarters to the Château de Pontivy, which his grandfather Jean II de Rohan built.
