Rohonc Codex

The Codex Rohonczi, named after the former western Hungarian city Rohonc (now Rechnitz, Austria ), is composed of 448 pages manuscript, which contains 87 illustrations. It was bequeathed by Count Batthyány Gusztáv as part of the donated his private library in 1838 at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The further origin of the manuscript is unknown, as is the writing and the language in which it is written. The number of characters used therein is about ten times as large as the alphabets. Various Entzifferungsversuche been made.

Description

The Codex Rohonczi is a bound folio consisting of 224 pages with 448 pages ( Verso Recto ) in the format 12 x 10 cm. Each page is described with nine to fourteen lines. The material of the leaves is a paper type that was common in Northern Italy in the early 16th century. Some pages have a watermark in the form of an encircled anchor on under a sechsstrahligem star. Recent findings point to a site of manufacture in the Republic of Venice, which invalidated earlier suspicions about a formation before the Middle Ages.

The writing direction is the object of discussions. The apparent right alignment of lines could indicate that the text is to be read from right to left. Also could every other page ' overhead ' been involved be ( but this is doubted by the orientation of some drawings). On a total of 87 pages next to the text also miniature paintings are in black and white. In addition to recurring characters, which may be the main characters of the story, you will see landscapes, angels, crowned kings, priests figures and often churches or religious temples. These are provided with various religious symbols, including crosses, crescents and sun symbols. It seems that the miniatures represent either a description of a syncretic religion or sect, or occur the experiences of the main characters in a multi-religious environment in which Christians, Muslims and pagans. Since the text so far could not be decrypted, all attempts at interpretation focus on the drawings.

The text of the codex is written in an unknown script, which consists of 150 to 200 characters. Whether it is an unknown ancient script, or a consciously chosen by the writer or the writers of secret writing, now could not be clarified until. Researchers are pursuing, among other similarities with Hungarian runes dakorumänischer or other (possibly a priori ) languages. Due to the number of characters used, it should not have to be a letter of Scripture, but rather a syllabary. All common consonants combined with the usual vowels would result in a value of 150 to 200 characters. But this is only one of the assumptions.
