Roland Culver

Joseph Roland Culver ( born August 21, 1900 in London, † March 1, 1984 in Henley -on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England ) was a British theater and film actor.

Life

Roland Culver visited the Highgate College and was from 1918 to 1919 a pilot in the Royal Air Force. After his military service he was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as an actor. In 1924 he debuted at Hull Repertory Theatre and appeared from 1931 on in British films. He was there mostly to be seen as typical English gentleman. In 1946, he was as Lord Desham in mother's heart ( To Each His Own ) next to Olivia de Havilland his Hollywood debut. In 1947 he played the Skyguard Mr. Jordan in the Rita Hayworth - musical A goddess on earth ( Down to Earth ). In Billy Wilder's I Kiss Your Hand, Madame ( The Emperor Waltz ), he played in 1948 as Baron Holenia again a nobleman. In 1956, he was seen on television, including the series The Avengers and melon ( The Avengers, 1968). However, he continued to perform on stage. In 1966 he was nominated for the Broadway production of Chekhov 's play Ivanov for the Tony Award as Best Actor. In 1979 he published his autobiography under the title Not Quite a Gentleman. Four years later he went into retirement.

From 1932 to 1946 Culver was married to actress and casting agent Daphne Rye. The marriage had two sons, Michael and Robin Culver, who followed in the footsteps of their parents and also actors were. 1947 married Culver Nan Hopkins. The marriage lasted until his death. Roland Culver died in 1984 at the age of 83 years in Henley -on-Thames, Oxfordshire, of a heart attack.
