Roman Catholic Diocese of Arauca

The Diocese of Arauca (Latin: Dioecesis Araucensis, Spanish: diócesis de Arauca ) is a location in Columbia Roman Catholic diocese based in Arauca.

History

Pope Benedict XV. founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Arauca on May 26, 1915 from annexations of the Vicariate Apostolic of Casanare. On November 11 1970 she was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate.

On July 19, 1984, was raised to the bishopric, which was the Archdiocese of Nueva Pamplona assumed as suffragan. In 1989, Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve, the first bishop of the diocese, was killed by the ELN guerrillas.
