Roman Catholic Diocese of Banjul

The immediate Diocese of Banjul (Latin Dioecesis Baniulensis ) is located in Gambia Roman Catholic diocese based in Banjul.

History

The diocese was founded as a mission sui juris on May 6, 1931, after it had become on March 8, 1951 the Apostolic Prefecture of Bathurst in Gambia, collected on 24 June 1957 to the Diocese of Bathurst in Gambia. Took place on May 9, 1974, after the change of name of the capital, the name was changed to Diocese of Banjul.

The area is an old mission field of Spiritanerpatres, even today put the bishop of the diocese. It covers the whole country Gambia ( 11,295 km ²) and in 2006 was about 42,400 Catholics. Since the 1980s, Banjul local diocesan priest in 2002 it was 13, so that one is no longer solely rely on the twelve religious priests, which are derived in large part from abroad. Bishops
