Roman Catholic Diocese of Bururi

The diocese of Bururi (Latin: Dioecesis Bururiensis ) in Burundi was founded on June 6, 1961, and was appointed 25 November 2006 on the Roman Catholic Church Province of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura.

The diocese is 6500 km ². Of the approximately one million inhabitants in the territory of the diocese are about 40 percent Catholics who are cared for by about 60 priests in 18 parishes.

First bishop was from the founding Joseph Martin, who resigned on 17 September 1973. His successor was the same day Bududira Bernard, who died on 19 November 2005 in office. The diocese of Bururi was ad interim managed hereinafter referred to as apostolic Governorship by the Archbishop of Gitega, Bishop Simon Ntamwana. Since 25 June 2007, the professor of Old Testament exegesis Venant Bacinoni, himself originally from the diocese of Bururi, Bishop of Bururi.

For many years the diocese Bururi connects a partnership with the community of St. Paul in Uerdingen ( Germany ).
