Roman Catholic Diocese of Grajaú

The diocese Grajaú (Latin: Dioecesis Graiahuensis ) is a location in Brazil the Roman Catholic Diocese based in Grajaú in the state of Maranhão.

History

The diocese Grajaú was on February 10, 1922 by Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Rationi congruit out of territory of the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão built as Territorialprälatur São José do Grajaú. The Territorialprälatur São José do Grajaú was the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão assumed as suffragan. The Territorialprälatur São José do Grajaú announced on July 22, 1939 from parts of its territory establishing the Territorialprälatur Pinheiro. For more territorial concessions were made on 14 January 1958 establishing the Territorialprälatur Carolina, and on 22 June 1968 laying foundation of the diocese Bacabal.

On August 4, 1981, the Territorialprälatur São José do Grajaú was elevated by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Qui ad Beatissimi Petri to the diocese. The Diocese of São José do Grajaú was renamed on October 9, 1984 in Diocese Grajaú.
