Roman Catholic Diocese of Ibarra

The Diocese of Ibarra (Latin: Dioecesis Ibarrensis, Spanish: diócesis de Ibarra ) is a located in Ecuador Roman Catholic diocese based in Ibarra. It includes the province of Imbabura.

History

Pope Pius IX. founded the bishopric Ibarra on December 29, 1862 of territory of the Archdiocese of Quito, where there was also a suffragan.

The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1868 and rebuilt in 1872. On March 17, 1965, lost part of its territory to the diocese Tulcán.
