Roman Catholic Diocese of Mercedes

The Diocese of Mercedes (Latin: Dioecesis Mercedanianus ) is a Roman Catholic suffragan in Uruguay, located in the city of Mercedes. Diocesan Bishop is a native of the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco Carlos María Collazzi Irazábal.

History

The establishment of the Diocese of Mercedes carried out from the territorial division of the Uruguayan dioceses of San José de Mayo and Salto, on 17 December 1960. The diocese consists of sixteen parishes in which about 170,000 Roman Catholics are cared for pastorally by seventeen diocesan priests and six priests. In the care of the parish communities sixteen deacons in the permanent diaconate, 27 nuns and seven monks are active. It is placed under church law the Archdiocese of Montevideo.
