Romeiko

Romeiko is a red grape variety.

It is an indigenous variety of Greece and is common on many islands of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, but especially in the region of Chania in Crete. It is according to the varieties and Mavroudi Liatiko the third most widely planted red variety in Greece. The name derives from the traditional term " Romios " for the modern Greeks from (literally "Roman " as a former state people of the Byzantine Empire, see also Arabic " Roumi " and Turkish " rum "). The vineyard area was approximately 2,200 hectares in the 1990s.

In Crete, both red, rosé and white wines are produced from this late-ripening and high-yielding variety. In particular, in the region of Chania is produced according to Jancis Robinson still red old style, which are very difficult.

Synonyms: Mavroromeiko, Loïssima, Loussima, Mavro Kritis, Romeïco, Romeiko Mavro and Romaico.
