Rosa Russo Iervolino

Rosa Russo Iervolino ( born September 17, 1936 in Naples), actually Iervolino Rosa Russo, also in the spelling Jervolino, is an Italian politician. She was from 2001 to 2011 mayor of Naples.

Family and career

Rosa Russo Iervolino is the daughter of Maria De Under Judge Jervolino and Angelo Raffaele Jervolino. Her mother was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and State Secretary of Education from 1954 to 1959 as well as for health in 1963. Their father was Postmaster General from 1948 to 1950 and from 1962 to 1963 Minister of Health. My great-great uncle Francis of sub- judge was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly.

She is a doctorate in law. Her dissertation dealt with the theme of " equal pay for men and women" in the world of work. From 1961 to 1968 she was employed by the Italian Council for Economy and Labour ( CNEL ) and then she worked from 1968 to 1973 for the Italian Ministry of Finance.

Political career

Pink Iervolino entered 1954 Christian Democrats (DC) in the party in which even their parents were active. From 1968 to 1978 she was Vice President of the Italian Women's Centre, which is close to the Christian Democrats. In 1979, she was first elected to the Senate ( 1992, resigned her mandate ) and was from 1985 to 1987 President of the Parliamentary Commission for the RAI. From 1994 to 2001 she was a member of the Chamber of Deputies.

From 1987 to 1992 she was Minister of Social Affairs from 1992 to 1994 she was Minister for Public Education and Minister of the Interior from 1998 to 1999 and thus Italy's first woman to lead the Ministry of Interior. In 1994, she was instrumental in the transformation of the Christian Democrats in the Partito Popolare Italiano ( short PPI) involved and was the Interim President from April to July 1994. 1999 she was promising candidate for the office of President of the Republic of Italy, but was defeated Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

In 2001 she was elected with 52.9 % for Mayor of Naples and confirmed in 2006 with 57% in this office. In the 2011 election, they no longer went to. She is a member of the Partito Democratico, the successor party to the PPI.

The name

Something confusing are the different versions of their name. Officially, the Mayor Rosa Russo Iervolino because by law in Italy at the time of their marriage the maiden name of a woman could only stand in front of the name of the husband. So her name was also on the ballot. Commonly used but the order is Rosa Russo Iervolino. However, you even sign with Rosa Russo Jervolino or short with RRJ. However, their followers call them only briefly Rosetta.
