The University of Music and Theatre in Rostock was founded in 1994. It is located in the former St. Catherine's Monastery in the Hanseatic city of Rostock. The university is a member of Rostock, founded in 1995 Association of Baltic Academies of Music in organizing 17 universities from the Baltic Confederation exchange programs and artists' projects and internationally coveted training facility for musicians: the approximately 540 students come from 42 nations.

History

1947 in Rostock founded a college of music, theater and dance. The line had the composer Rudolf Wagner- Régeny. This college was later branch of the Berlin Hochschule "Hanns Eisler". In 1968, the establishment of the " State Drama School, Rostock ," which was annexed in the 1980s at the Academy of Dramatic Arts " Ernst Busch" Berlin took place. From these traditions out the current stand-alone artistic university was created in 1994. The founding principal was Wilfrid Lochlin, who worked previously at the Hochschule für Musik Köln.

The accommodation, it initially proved difficult. In a former special school on buses beard and at Ulmenstrasse housed, the space was very limited for the growing number of students. In April 2001, new spaces could be obtained in the reconstructed and rebuilt by Jon Reimann former St. Catherine's Monastery in the eastern old town of Rostock.

The university is a venue for a variety of concerts. Over 250 performances will take place with the participation of teachers and students each year.

Since July 2009, the actor, painter and writer Armin Mueller-Stahl is a member of the University Council of the HMT Rostock.

Library

The library of the HMT Rostock covers about 35,000 music scores, as well as approximately 12,000 books and magazines, as well as 6,500 sound recordings and video recordings. It is aimed primarily at the university members, but is also open to the public.
