Roy Williamson (bishop)

Robert Kerr " Roy " Williamson ( born December 18, 1932) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1984 to 1991 Bishop of Bradford and from 1991 to 1998 Bishop of Southwark in the Church of England.

Williamson comes from a mixed - denominational marriage. His father was a Protestant; he was shipyard workers on the docks in Belfast. His mother was Catholic. He grew up in East Belfast in St Donard 's district. He attended Elmgrove Public Elementary School in Belfast. At the age of 23 he came to London and worked there for six years as a Christian missionary ( City Missionary ) in the evangelical London City Missionary. He went to London at the Kingston Polytechnic. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied theology at Oak Hill Theological College in Southgate, London. In 1962 he was ordained a deacon; In 1963 the priest. His priestly career began from 1962 to 1966 as a vicar ( Curate ) on the Crowborough Parish Church in Crowborough. In 1966 he became pastor (Vicar ) at St. Paul 's Church in the district of Hyson Green in Nottingham. From 1971 he was pastor at St Ann with Emmanuel Church, also in Nottingham. From 1978 to 1984 he was Archdeacon of Nottingham ( Archdeacon of Nottingham ). In 1984 he was ordained a bishop. In 1984 he became, after the death of Geoffrey Paul in 1983, his successor and the 7th Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England. He held until 1991 This church office. His successor as Bishop of Bradford was David Smith. Williamson was then in 1991, succeeding Ronald Bowlby, Bishop of Southwark in the Church of England. This office he held until his retirement in January 1998. His successor as Bishop of Southwark, Tom Butler.
